Biodiversity
Nature as climate solution, not casualty. Including an overview of the international REDD negotiations for reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation; and how we can improve fire management for biodiversity and carbon.
Presenters
Margaret Blakers. Organiser of a recent forum on ‘Biodiversity for Climate Protection’ and the first Atlas of Australian Birds.
Judy Lambert, Part-time facilitator to the NSW Hotspots Fire and Biodiversity program and Director of Community Solutions.
Ellen Roberts. Friends of the Earth Melbourne. Recently returned from researching REDD in Indonesia, where the Australian government is pursuing REDD pilot projects, and also from the UNFCCC intersessional in Bangkok.
Workshop overview
We will start with an overview of carbon accounting (Margaret) to set the scene for a discussion of the loopholes in domestic and international climate policies created by the forest ‘offset’ scheme called REDD (reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation in developing countries) presented by Ellen. Leaping to the opposite end of the spectrum, Judy will address the practical aspect of current and future fire management in rural and peri-urban Australia, outlining a consensus-building model that looks after biodiversity and carbon, as well as asset protection. There will be three 10 minute talks, with plenty of time for discussion.
