What a year!

As the year comes to a close, I’m delighted to share with you The Green Institute’s Annual Report for 2022/23, showcasing the extraordinary year that was.

It was hard to notice it as it flew by, which is why it’s so important to look back and see what we achieved together: so many of you, and so many others in and around Greens politics, coming together with our tiny team at the Green Institute to talk in depth about what we’re trying to achieve, and how we believe we should set about achieving it.

At a two-day strategic retreat with our board, members and staff a little over a year ago, we clarified our strategic direction as “seeding, feeding and leading transformative Greens politics” by “creating the space for conversations about Greens politics that can’t happen anywhere else but are crucial for our movement’s transformative goals.”

Through conferences, publications, workshops and book events; by inviting contributions and creating space for contesting ideas; on issues as diverse as peace and Basic Income, as specific as the Nature Repair Market and broad as democracy; the Institute has been here to help the Greens deliberate around what we’re working to deliver.

I invite you to take the time to read about what we did in 2022-23 and celebrate our achievements with us.

Of course, since the end of the financial year, we’ve held our hugely successful conference, The City Transformed, where Greens from all over the country came together to discuss ideas about urbanism and how we are to live together in cities at the end of the world as we know it. We’ve also published another edition of Green Agenda, with leading Greens including Adam Bandt, Jo Vallentine and Lee Rhiannon responding to, disagreeing with, and extending the ideas in Living Democracy, and we’ve begun to publish some of the conference proceedings there.

And we’ve been planning some exciting ways to involve ever more of you ever more deeply in thinking and acting on Greens politics from next year!

A Green Agenda Writers’ Group is coming your way. And more engaging and participatory symposiums on key issues will deepen the way we do our publications and webinars.

But here’s the thing.

As you’ll see if you read our Annual Report – we get all this work done on the smell of an olive oily rag. Our entire annual budget is barely the salary of a single MP or an executive level public servant. If we want to deliver exciting programs, we need your support.

To make next year’s plans viable, we need to raise another $25,000. Even appreciating these difficult economic times, that’s not a lot!

That’s barely $2 for each member of the Australian Greens. It’s 50 of you generously donating $500. It’s 200 of you chipping in $10/month.
