Green Agenda: On flourishing with nature, grassroots organising, and Palestine

By Carlos Morreo August 13, 2024

Here’s a selection from the latest Green Agenda issue, our archive, and what we’re reading and sharing, while we’re working on Green Agenda’s next issue, out shortly.

We’re also putting together two call for papers — on forests, and on peace, non-violence and demilitarisation. So, watch out for that too.

Writing from Tasmania’s Huon Valley, author Linda Cockburn reflects on a life lived as environmentalist project and her developing relationship with the living world. There will be no tech-fixes, instead Linda calls for withdrawing from capitalism and decisively moving towards a life based on flourishing in reciprocity with nature — what the ancients used to call a life of eudaimonia

Plus, we share a generous piece from our archive by Huong Truong. Huong is now running to represent Fraser in the next federal election. In her essay Huong writes about the power of grassroots organising within the Greens movement.

Beyond Green Agenda, we’re also sharing recent pieces on degrowth border policies, on planetary inequity and Australia’s contribution, and new research quantifying the staggering scale of unequal exchange in the global economy. So much work to do to undo all this.

On Palestine. Writing from Western Sydney, poet Omar Sakr explains why he joined the Greens and why Labor must lose the next election. Labor’s complicity in the ongoing genocide in Palestine demands accountability at the ballot box. Meanwhile, Sara Saleh explores how solidarity with Palestine demands that we build truly transformative movements wherever we are, interrogating our own roles in oppression here and there — Palestine as liberatory praxis

Even though we publish quarterly issues, we’re always happy to hear from readers and would-be contributors. We especially welcome submissions from writers and researchers, artists, and activists who are committed to deepening our understanding of place, Indigenous sovereignty, Country, politics, economy, and justice, from on the ground, left, and ecological perspectives.
