An Active Call To Peacemake

An active call to peacemake - Green Institute

With Green Agenda, I get to curate and edit a range of essays and articles – grounded forms of writing, by people and from places, projects and communities, where transformative or prefigurative change is already at play.

I feel that Tim’s latest Green Institute project The Missing Peace is doing something similar. ‘Peace and nonviolence’, as many of us know, remains one of the least spoken about pillars of the environmental and social justice movement constituted as party. With The Missing Peace, Tim is refusing to gloss over the complexities of the present, while simultaneously refusing to politely accept the status quo. The project is more than just a matter of opening up a much needed discussion, but an active call to peacemake!

And next week’s webinar ‘The Power of Nonviolence – experiences in war and revolution’, the second in the series, should be a good example of this. We will be hearing from three powerful activists, women whose experiences, lives and work in Serbia, in South Sudan, and in Ukraine, give us a sense of the extraordinary power of nonviolence.

Webinar: 8pm AEST, Thursday 12 September 2024

Together, Vesna, Felicity and Sunday will share how it is that nonviolence in its active form can be a tool of the oppressed as we learn to organise collectively. A tool that has long been successfully used, at different moments, in different ways, to resist the violence and oppression of capital, racism, colonialism, and nationalism, but also to respond to war, and bring down tyrannical power.

So, be sure to register your place here.

And in the lead up to Thursday’s talk, I thought we might share three pieces from the Green Agenda archive picking up on some of these themes:

See you on Thursday, or on the streets as we join the thousands of protesters seeking to Disrupt Land Forces and the creeping militarisation of the country!

Warmly,
