The Politics Of The Common Good: Book Launch & Panel Discussion
Jane R. Goodall’s The Politics Of The Common Good: Dispossession In Australia – Book Launch & Panel Discussion
Panel with Professor Bronwen Morgan & Tim Hollo
To be introduced by Dr. Stephanie Dowrick
‘The Earth is a Common Treasury’, proclaimed the English Revolutionaries in the 1640s. Does the principle of the commons offer us ways to respond now to the increasingly destructive effects of neoliberalism? This panel discussion on The Politics of the Common Good marks the publication of Jane Goodall’s book (NewSouth) and draws together three speakers with interests in the restoration of the commons.
The outcome of the last federal election in Australia has left many people shocked and dispirited, but any radical transformation of our political culture requires a commitment that runs stronger and deeper than the tides that turn at elections. It is no longer just a matter of one side of politics prevailing over another. There are principles at stake that are fundamental to our democracy and to our ‘common wealth’ in the widest and most enduring sense of that term.
